Sensory Motor Integration
It is accepted that children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) possess deficiencies in ability to appropriately use sensory information and past experience to solve current problems efficiently. It has been hypothesized that social, emotional and motor aspects of development are interrelated and deficiency in one area of development (motor) may adversely affect other aspects of development, such as social and/or emotional factors. Society has expectations for a child at each level of development. Therefore, if the individual is unable to fulfill that expectation at a certain age (particularly in the areas of self-help skills), stress may arise between parent and child. This concern may also affect social and emotional spheres of development. Vision, Kinesthesis and Audition senses are all used in the performance of sensory motor activites.
Each individual will be assessed and measured on Neuromotor Processes, Gross Motor Function, and Fine Motor Function. Then an individualized program will be designed for the learner based on his/her capabilites. Finally, Sensory - Motor Integration intervention (including: Perceptual Motor Activities, Crawling, Creeping, Hopping, Leaping, Skipping, Jumping, Climbing, Rolling, Swinging, Balance, Eye and Foot Coordination, General Muscle tone, Flexibility, and more) will be provided. Developing Motor Planning is our main objective using gymnastics within the ASD.
